Fleas are blood-sucking, wingless parasitic insects with thin flat bodies and hard shells. To kill them one needs to squeeze them in between two hard surfaces or the fingernails. Fleas multiply quickly and are difficult to get rid of. Pets become infested by coming into contact with other animals or from the surrounding environment.
These insects cause severe itching, which can lead to inflammation. Fleas are usually found on the furry area of the belly and inner thighs on the body of the pet. A severe case of fleas can lead to hair loss, anemia, and other skin infections in pets.
To get rid of fleas, some natural flea prevention tips include the following:
1. Salt
An easily available item in every household, salt is a safe alternative for natural flea prevention. A non-harmful and hygroscopic compound, salt has the ability to attract moisture, and this dehydrating property attracts water from the body of the flea, thus killing it. One can sprinkle salt in infested areas such as carpets, floors, and boards. Then the entire area should be vacuumed to get rid of fleas. This procedure should be continued for at least 2-3 weeks for effective results. One should not apply salt directly on the pet as it might cause adverse effects.
2. Lemon
D-limonene found in lemons is an effective option for natural flea prevention. Mix an equal proportion of lemon and lukewarm water and then dip the dog’s comb in this water and brush the fur evenly. This lemon solution will not only kill the fleas but also the eggs of the fleas. Repeat this procedure every day for a few days for better results.
3. Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has acidic properties that help in getting rid of fleas. Mix an equal proportion of apple cider vinegar and water to make a solution. Spray this solution on the pet’s body avoiding the eyes, mouth, and ears. This solution can also be sprayed around the house to keep it free from fleas.
4. Boric acid
Just like salt, boric acid contains dehydrating properties that help in killing fleas. Sprinkle boric acid in the surroundings and let the powder rest for a few hours and then vacuum the place thoroughly. Be very careful while using boric acid as it can cause health hazards in pets if consumed.
5. Essential oils
Easily available in the market, essential oils act as an effective alternative for natural flea prevention. The strong smell of essential oils is a powerful repellent. Essential oils can be applied to the dog’s collar. This remedy should be repeated for a few days for effective results. Essential oils should be used in limited quantities; before using any essential oil make sure that your pet is not allergic to it, or it could cause some serious health problems.
