Having properly cut and groomed hair adds to your personality. It makes you look presentable and in some ways boosts your confidence too. Not only women but men also take a lot of care in grooming their hair. Today, the market is flooded with products to make hair look perfect. For women, a must-have in their vanity case is a hairdryer and hair serum while for men, it is men’s hair gel.
Hair gel is a jelly-like substance used to style a person’s hair. It performs the arduous task of keeping the tresses styled and maintained for a longer duration. It offers a desirable wet look to the locks that make the hair look neat and well-maintained, giving the personality a boost. However, hair gels do have side effects and can damage the scalp, hair, and the body due to the harmful chemicals in them.
Mae’s hair gel is not safe due to the ingredients used in it. The branded ones are more reliable than the cheap quality ones, but they still harm the hair. They contain a high concentration of alcohol and other chemicals that can be very damaging for the hair and scalp.
The main concerns with men’s hair gel includes the following:
1. Drying and dehydrating the hair
All hair gels have alcohol and corrosive chemicals that absorb all the moisture from the hair and scalp, making them lifeless and weak. They reduce the production of sebum, making them brittle, dry and breakage-prone, giving rise to an itchy and flaky scalp.
2. Hair loss
It has been seen that people who use men’s hair gel regularly have experienced a lot of hair fall. The gels tend to dehydrate the scalp and make the hair fall. The chemicals in the gels along with the pollutants in the air tend to react with the dead cells and excess sebum on the scalp. This clogs all the hair follicles and leads to hair loss. If this hair loss is not corrected, it can lead to baldness and receding hairline.
3. Dandruff
Shedding skin on the scalp is a natural phenomenon, but if this continues at a faster rate, then dandruff is formed. It happens when the scalp becomes dehydrated or if the skin has dermatitis or eczema, or if it is infected by yeast-like fungus. If you use men’s hair gel regularly, the scalp becomes dry, making it flaky and itchy with unbalanced sebum production. Also, the skin pores and hair follicles get clogged. All these issues aggravate the problem of dandruff, Seborrhoeic dermatitis or scalp inflammation that can result in other skin diseases like acne.
4. Hair damage
Men’s hair gel is also known to cause damage and discoloration of natural hair. Hair gets split ends and the natural color fades away. It does not mean that the hair goes grey, but it inevitably becomes dull and dry. Hair gel does not allow proper nourishment to the hair and thus, disturbs its pH balance. Hair grows scarce, unhealthy, and brittle. Prolonged usage of hair gel can also lead to graying of hair.
